Portrait Head of Queen Tiye
Egypt reached the pinnacle of its power under Amenophis III (1390-1353 BC). The outward looking spirit of this age is also expressed by his selection of his principal wife, Queen Tiye, whose family were commoners from abroad. The extremely realistic Berlin portrait head of Tiye conveys a fascinating impression of this personality. The silver headdress with gold earrings and uraeuses (sacred serpents) was later covered by a linen wig studded with small blue glass pearls. It is the headdress of a deity, to which the crown, which was added afterwards, also belongs. Upon the death of Amenophis III, Queen Tiye was regarded as equal with the gods.
