Facade of Mshatta Palace
The era of antiquity was history as the desert castle of Mschatta was built in the year 743-744 not far from today's capital city of Jordan. Its abundantly adorned 35m façade came to Berlin as a gift to Emperor Wilhelm II from Sultan Abdulhamid II. It builds a bridge with its figurative motifs between late antiquity and early Islam and in this dialogue function it forms a programmatic conclusion and pinnacle of the main circuit. While it is currently kept in the upper level of the Pergamonmuseum's South Wing, in the future the Mschatta Façade will stand in the North Wing, which will house the Museum für Islamische Kunst, on a level with the other examples of monumental architecture of antiquity.
