The Future of the Museum Island Berlin

The Museum Island Berlin is being restored based on a Master Plan, and developed into a future-oriented museum complex. This website gives information on the future character of the Museum Island. It explains the guiding principles of the Master Plan Museum Island, which was agreed upon in 1999 by the Stiftung Preussischer Kulturbesitz (Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation) and its Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (National Museums in Berlin). Since then, the step-by-step realization of the Master plan has been under way. Three of the five museum buildings have already been renovated and restored.

The unique ensemble in the heart of Berlin became part of the UNESCO World Heritage in 1999. Its magnificent museums were designed by famous architects of their time. The collections exhibited on the Museum Island range from prehistory and antiquity all the way to 19th-century art. Each year, more than three million people let themselves be fascinated by the Museum Island.
