When the Berlin Wall fell and Germany was reunited, the Altes Museum (Old Museum) was very well received, due to significant special exhibitions, in the area which was once again becoming the centre of Berlin.

In 1998 the Collection of Classical Antiquities moved from its temporary location in Berlin-Charlottenburg (in West Berlin) back to its historic location and now, on the main floor, presents Greek art in a setting by Agata Torricella as a first part of her extensive overall stock. In 2005 the Egyptian Museum followed to occupy the upper floor of the Altes Museum with a new permanent exhibition centred around the bust of Nefertiti before it finally moves into the Neues Museum in 2009. According to the general renovations foreseen by the plans of Hilmer & Sattler und Albrecht (Munich / Berlin), the Altes Museum will again be completely available to the Collection of Classical Antiquities and connected spatially and thematically with the other museums of the Museumsinsel via the Archaeological Promenade.
