As a museum for paintings and sculptures of the 19th century, the Alte Nationalgalerie (Old National Gallery) offers a retrospective view as well as a look forward to modernity. Its works span the range from the Classicism of the Goethe era through Romanticism and Biedermeier and on to the Impressionism which had already been exhibited in the Nationalgalerie before 1900.
During the entire 19th century the Nationalgalerie had been the place for all that which is modern, including integration of painting and sculpture as coequal media of artistic expression. The Nationalgalerie has retained this freshness in the renovated rooms which were reopened in 2001.
